Taurine, a wonder molecule?

Taurine is a type of amino acid that is found in many foods and is often added to energy drinks. Many people take taurine as a supplement, and some researchers refer to it as a "miracle molecule". Taurine has been shown to have several health benefits, such as lower risk of disease and improved athletic performance¹.

In terms of negative effects of taurine, there are not many reported side effects of taurine. But some studies have shown that high doses of taurine can lead to side effects such as headaches, sleep disturbances and nausea¹.

Foods that contain high levels of taurine include meat, fish and seafood¹.

Several studies have suggested that taurine may play a role in making the body more sensitive to insulin and may help overcome some risk factors for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes¹³. Taurine has also been shown to have a positive effect on glucose homeostasis and has hypoglycemic, anti-obesity, hypotensive and hypolipidemic effects².

However, it is important to note that there is not enough evidence to conclude that taurine can be used to fight type 2 diabetes. More research is needed in this area¹.

Yes, there is some animal research that suggests that increased intake of taurine may help prevent type 2 diabetes by reducing blood sugar levels and insulin resistance. Interestingly, people with diabetes tend to have lower levels of taurine – another indicator that it may play a role in this disease.

Although energy drinks often contain taurine, it is not recommended as a source of the amino acid taurine. Synthetic taurine (and synthetic caffeine) is used in energy drinks and such products have a number of ingredients that do not provide positive health effects, such as sugar, synthetic sweeteners (aspartame, acesulfame K, sucralose).
