What is the Nutri-Score system?

The Nutri-Score system is a food labeling system developed by the French government to provide consumers with a simple and easy-to-understand way of assessing the nutritional quality of packaged foods. The system assigns a letter grade and corresponding color (from dark green for the healthiest foods to red for the least healthy) to packaged foods based on a calculation that assesses the amounts of different nutrients and ingredients, both good and bad, that are present in the product.

The calculation takes into account the number of calories, sugar, saturated fat, sodium, protein, fibre, fruit and vegetables and other nutrients in a given product, with points deducted for negative elements such as excess sugar or saturated fat, and points added for positive ones such as fiber or presence of fruit and vegetables. The resulting score is then translated into a letter grade and color code, with “A” representing the healthiest options and “E” representing the least healthy.

The Nutri-Score system is entirely voluntary and has been adopted by a number of European countries, including France, Belgium, Spain and Germany. It is intended to supplement existing nutritional information such as the list of ingredients and nutrition facts panel to help consumers make healthier food choices by providing a clear and easy-to-understand picture of the nutritional quality of packaged food.

How is the Nutri-Score calculated?

Nutri-Score is calculated using 100 grams or 100 ml of food. Nutritionally "unfavorable" nutrient values N are balanced against nutritionally "favorable" nutrient values P (Nutri-Score = N - P). The sodium sugar content, calorie content, saturated fatty acids and converted salt content are all unfavorable components (N). Fruit, vegetables, nuts, fibre, protein and walnut, rapeseed and olive oils are among the beneficial components (P). Santé publique France offers a Excel sheet for calculating the Nutri-Score in English  (as of 21 September 2021).
